The music sounds perfect in your imagination… you know exactly how you want your audience to feel… and yet it just doesn’t quite sound the way you want it to?

It’s not your fault! It’s not a question of ‘talent’, either. In fact, there are age-old, tried-and-tested principles of playing the violin that work… time and again, perfectly consistently, every time.

If you know these principles, you can do pretty much anything you want to do on the vioiln (OK, if you want to play Paganini Concertos with orchestra then you’ll still need hundreds of hours to practice! But the point is it’s totally possible!)

However, if you don’t know what these fundamental principles are, then you’re destined to a lifetime of frustration… you may even decide to give up playing the violin altogether. A lot of people do.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6" css=".vc_custom_1503398487044{margin-top: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;}"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="42778" css=".vc_custom_1499093657883{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;background-color: #f9bb5a !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

I learned all this from bitter experience…

Simon Hewitt Jones

Simon Hewitt Jones, Founder/Director of ViolinSchool

I was lucky enough to be trained at all sorts of top music institutions including the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music in London, and the University of the Arts in Berlin. I also took many thousands of hours of private lessons, and attended summer courses with leading violin professors from around the world.

When I started work as a violinist in my early twenties, I spent all the money I had on travelling to take lessons from ‘experts’ and ‘gurus’ who I thought might have the answers I was looking for about how to play the violin… I was on a serious ‘quest’ to understand every last detail of the instrument, and play it as well as I possibly could.

But even with all these years of ‘expert’ training and advice, I felt like there was something missing.

It all came home to me after a session we did for Virgin Records. I’d fixed the strings, and was leading the band. We were playing from sheet music, but the band wanted an extra ‘wooo-oooo’ sound from the strings at the end of one of the tracks.

It was my job to explain to the other players what to do. I went back from the control room into the studio, and said: ‘they want a kind of wooo-oooo sound… a bit like this’. We practiced it a few times until the producer was happy, then played a couple of ‘takes’ so that we had it covered.

But in my mind, I knew I could do better. How could I have got a better result, quicker? Why did I struggle to explain what to do, even though I could play it perfectly? How could I communicate it better to my colleagues?

Up until that moment, I’d always learned violin by listening, observing, and practising. I still do today. But I didn’t really think deeply about how I was doing what I was doing (or even why I was doing it).

It was just a vague desire to be really good at playing the violin and communicating with people through music… coupled with enormous determination, and many many many hours of practice throughout my childhood and my teens.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="11578" css=".vc_custom_1499090683660{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;background-color: #e69134 !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

But then, everything changed.

I suddenly realised that if I could carefully work out exactly how I was doing what I was doing - instead of just relying on my instincts - then I could be much more exact about my practice; I could save time by only working on exactly what I needed to work on, and my progress would become MUCH quicker because I wasn’t wasting time on the wrong things.

By becoming really clear about why I was doing any given task, I transformed my violin practice. I was saving hours each month, and my playing was improving faster than ever before. My performance anxiety disappeared, because I was no longer worrying about how I’d deal with concert situations; now I knew how I’d deal with unexpected challenges, and my confidence and stage presence improved too.

Around that time, I started to teach. I was excited by how I could now communicate techniques really clearly to other people. So I built up a private teaching practice in London, and started to help lots of learners to improve their playing themselves.

Fast forward a few years…

I was working on a PhD at the Royal Academy of Music, when my research supervisor said to me ‘ah.. You’re searching for objective truth about violin technique! Have you heard the scientific term ‘first principles’?

I looked it up immediately on Wikipedia, and from that moment I was hooked. I was on a permanent quest to find and explain the fundamental principles of good violin playing.

I never completed the PhD… I wanted to see results in action, so my private practice turned into a ‘studio’, and we ran our first offline Beginner Violin Class in early 2010. The results were amazing, so in 2012 we became ‘ViolinSchool’ and we’ve run classes and courses in our home town of London, UK ever since.

But what I really wanted to do was to create a digital version of ViolinSchool, so that anyone, anywhere could learn the principles of good playing! Which is what got us to where we are today...[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="6179" css=".vc_custom_1499169046347{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

What to do... when you don't know what to do!

For many years I’d been dreaming of an ‘interactive guide book’ that helps you do whatever it is you want to do with the violin. I imagined it a bit like the legendary Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, with ‘DON’T PANIC’ emblazoned on the outside, and endless, personalised guidance and information on the inside! That’s what i wish I’d had all those years 🙂

The magic of the Hitchhiker’s Guide is that wherever you are in the universe, whatever you’re trying to do, it will listen to where you are and what you need, and show you the possible options.

It won’t tell you what to do. It’s a guide, not a preacher. But it will show you the most well-trodden routes, and help you to make your own decisions.

That’s what ViolinSchool and the ViolinSchool Violin Guide Is for. It sits between you and your tutor (if you have one - but don’t worry if you don’t! If you’re a committed learner on a budget, we can help you most of the way).

The Violin Guide gives you CONTEXT. It gives you a MAP of your learning. It gives you a giant ‘YOU ARE HERE’ button so that you know where you’re at, and what your options are for moving forward.

It does that by showing you the PRINCIPLES behind what’s going on. Making sure that  you don’t just understand HOW but you also understand WHY you’re doing something. Because once you know WHY and HOW, like me in that recording session with the rock band, then you can easily work out what you need to do next.

Once you understand what your’e trying to do, you have clarity about your goals, then EVERYTHING CHANGES.

The funny thing is, it’s EASIER too. And soooooo much faster. You can gear EVERY last second of your practice towards RESULTS. Towards playing WHAT YOU WANT, in the WAY YOU WANT.

Doesn’t matter what it is. Folk, Jazz, Classical… whatever turns you on. Once you’re clear on WHAT you want to do, WHY you want to do it, and HOW you can make it happen, then all you have to do is to make sure that your practice is really efficient and effective

(and we’ll help you with that too).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="39930" css=".vc_custom_1499093800952{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Bite-Sized Chunks, One Step At A Time

Just because violin playing is complicated, doesn’t mean it has to be difficult. If you break everything down into bite sized chunks, then you can make really steady, step by step progress over the long term.

You’ll notice this approach across all of ViolinSchool’s learning programs and resources. From the Online Courses to the Video Lessons to the Checklists and Sheet Music to the Guide itself, you’ll notice that every resource relates back to our core process:

What you need to KNOW, then...
What you need to PRACTISE (exercises, etc.), then...
What you need to be able to DO, then...
The overall Learning Objective for each topic (e.g. ‘play with a clear sound').
Imagine having that level of clarity about each part of your learning! That’s what you’ll get when you become a member of ViolinSchool.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="42794" css=".vc_custom_1499168878277{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;background-image: url(https://1nn0ej3p5bo4262udm4626nz-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/stage-cropped.jpg?id=42779) !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Perform With Confidence

Imagine stepping out onto the stage, with the spotlights pointed right at you, and thousands of people focused entirely on you, waiting with anticipation for your performance to begin. Your breathing is even, your temperature is cool, you’re alert, excited, looking forward to what’s ahead. You sense the audience’s expectation, but you’re not overwhelmed by it. You know you can do this - and you know it, because you’ve tested it.

Using the performance practice and testing checklists from ViolinSchool, you know exactly how your body is going to react under pressure. As the adrenaline starts to kick in, your brain is already handling it -- you’re staying calm, following your training, and sending exactly the right instructions to different parts of your body.

As you play, you’re enjoying every note - as is the audience! - but you’re never getting too caught up in the emotion of the moment. Instead, you’re coolly observing your technique, making sure that your body and your energy stays even.

But there’s also a frisson of excitement; you’re alert, and ready to respond to whatever energy the audience brings to the room. You’re relaxed, but you’re in control. Your audience is in the palm of your hand. You’re living the music.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="25787" css=".vc_custom_1499168854392{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;background-image: url(https://1nn0ej3p5bo4262udm4626nz-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/violin-lesson.jpg?id=14709) !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

A Brilliant Team With World-Class Experience

I already told you how my frustrations as a graduate violin student fired my desire to create a school that was different, that asked deep and searching questions about how and why we do what we do… not just to learn ‘how it’s always been done’. So the next step in my quest was to find some incredible people to join me on the journey.

It took a while to put together, but the core team at ViolinSchool is now an amazing one, and we’re dedicated to our mission of helping anyone, anywhere to play the violin.

Our Editor-in-Chief is David Worswick, one of the finest violinists I know, who left his role as a first violinist in the London Symphony Orchestra to come and work full time at ViolinSchool. Originally self-taught, he was spotted by a teacher from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, and after a spell learning at the famed Chethams School of Music in Manchester, he trained at the Royal Academy of Music (where we met) before joining the London Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist. In addition to his work with us, David is a composer and arranger who’s passionate about beautiful, expressive melody and deep, dramatic harmony!

Caroline Lumsden is one of the world’s leading experts on string education for children, and (as well as being my aunt!) is the founder of our in-house publishing company Musicland Publications, which she started in the early 1980s. Since then, she’s trained thousands of string teachers all around the world, and founded three schools including the Gloucester Academy, and the Junior Strings programme at Trinity Laban school of music. We’re currently working with Caroline on a Parent & Child version of ViolinSchool’s training programs. Watch this space!

Setareh Mood, who heads up our Learning Support team, is a perfect example of how you can learn the violin at any age. Since starting to play at the age of 25, she's already achieved an astonishing level of accomplishment as a violinist - you can read her full story here. As well as making sure that ViolinSchool provides a fully holistic, vegan, and deeply thoughtful and compassionate Learning Support service, Setareh is developing her own Yoga practice (having recently finished 500 hours of advanced teacher training...!), and a program of Yoga for Violinists. Watch this space...

I’ve probably told you enough about me already, but if you want to know more, you can find my own website here. I’m an omnivorous violinist and have worked as a soloist, a session player, a guest orchestra leader, and on both the commercial and classical sides of ‘the music biz’. I’ve performed at most major concert halls in the UK, done a lot of live radio and toured extensively with different bands and ensembles, and my first chamber music recording won a BBC award. Nowadays much of my week is taken up by ViolinSchool, but you can often find me performing as a featured soloist in London - check the local concert listings and come and say hello![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="42757" css=".vc_custom_1499168787788{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Our Amazing Learners

I never fail to be blown away by what our learners achieve. They’re an amazing bunch of people - all ages, all experience levels, and from all walks of life.

There’s no better way to hear about how these violinists have used ViolinSchool to help them develop their playing than in their own words! So here are some recent blogs and videos so you can see what they’ve been getting up to![/vc_column_text][vc_video link="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Iw7RUBzaog" el_width="50" align="center"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="42746" css=".vc_custom_1499168154667{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;background-image: url(https://1nn0ej3p5bo4262udm4626nz-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/violin-scroll-e1495865844715.jpg?id=41441) !important;background-position: center;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Why Join ViolinSchool?

When you join ViolinSchool, you’ll have a LOT of resources at your fingertips. The Guide. The Online Courses. Videos. Checklists. And a lot of it is high-quality information that you won’t find anywhere else, including music, exercises and tutorials that are exclusive to ViolinSchool.

But frankly, there are many ways to learn the violin, and on the internet you’ll find a near-infinite amount of content to compete for your attention: perspectives, opinions, videos, sheet music, and much much more.

So why bother to join a violin school?

Well, that same magnificent infiniteness of the internet is also the exact same reason why a violin school is so useful!

None of us have infinite time to practice. There’s not a violinist on the planet who could benefit from more efficient practice. How do you make that happen? You need someone to cut through the clutter. To show you what you need to know. And what NOT to waste time on.

A crucial way to make efficient progress is to learn the principles of good playing. Make sure you understand the key ideas… the things which are most important. Know how to apply those ideas to the music you’re learning. Follow the 80/20.

Then you’re free to be creative.

Once your technical foundation is solid, you’ll have the confidence to do what you want to do in the way you want to do it.  You can rest assured that you have what it takes to make decisions for yourself - because the framework that’s been given to you by ViolinSchool is a great frame of reference for making the right decisions.

Your rapid development will speak for itself -- you’ll find it immensely rewarding to see yourself progressing on a weekly basis, and when you review your learning you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.

You’ll also find the camaraderie and social elements of the ViolinSchool community energising and fun… whether it’s our online groups or the offline events, you’ll be sure to find new friends and connections all over the world who share your passion for playing the violin.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" parallax="content-moving" parallax_image="15692" css=".vc_custom_1499168433899{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-right: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;border-right-width: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;border-left-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3" css=".vc_custom_1497998095008{background-color: rgba(237,237,237,0.75) !important;*background-color: rgb(237,237,237) !important;}"][vc_column_text]
