When we begin to learn the fingers of the left hand, we will need to support the violin from the neck. But for now, it's fine just to support the body of the instrument directly by holding the top of the body (the rib) just where the neck and the body meet. This is easier, and will help you to avoid picking up bad habits on the left side of the body whilst you practise the right arm bowing movements.
