This is the sharp symbol ... looks like the hashtag symbol! A sharp raises the pitch of a note by one semitone (half step).

Introducing the MINIM or HALF NOTE.
A key signature is the group of sharp or flat signs written at the beginning of each stave. The signs tell us which notes need to be raised or flattened by a semitone.
